England toiled all day at Lord's for just one wicket as South Africa dug in resolutely in pursuit of a draw in the first Test.
Starting the fourth day on 13-0 and facing a deficit of 333, openers Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie batted together for nearly five-and-a-half hours in a stand of 204, before Smith was out facing the second over of the second new ball.
But England were unable to make further inroads in the remaining 65 minutes of play, as McKenzie battled through to the close to finish unbeaten on 102, with Hasim Amla alongside him on 20.
Finishing the day on 242-1, South Africa are 104 runs behind and look set to escape with a draw after being asked to follow-on.
