Chennai: Dreams of thousands of students to get a government job after completing a distance learning course from the Madras University might be shattered.
The staff selection commission says their degree isn't eligible. A letter sent by the commission says, “For purpose of Employment in Central Government the degrees obtained through distance mode of education should also have the approval of the Distance Education Council. As per our records, such approval for the Madras University is available only for a period of one year in 2007 to 2008."
While universities across the country were asked to get the DEC's approval in 1995 itself – it was implemented across the board with a circular in 2005 – the Madras University says it got an approval only in 2007.
Two students of the university who graduated before 2007 and have now been rejected by the Staff Selection Commission on these grounds have now moved the Central Administrative tribunal.
"It's absolute carelessness on part of Madras university. Smaller universities like Annamalai University and Madurai Kamaraj Universities have taken approval," says the lawyer of the litigants, Shyam Sundar.
